Yooohooo! Guess who just started a new blog?! Greetings to my dear Queer community – the gays, the lesbians, the bi folk, the transfolk, and all the fabulous shades of Queeness that don’t quite fit into those (or perhaps any) boxes. This is a blog for all those who identify as being Queer of Spirit.
Because, for me, being Queer isn’t just something to do with what we have between our legs, but what’s between our ears and what’s in our hearts. It is a way of loving, yes. But it is also a way of being. This blog provides a forum in which I will share thoughts about Queer community, Queer culture, and the on-going journey of Queer liberation.
I was born almost exactly six months before the Stonewall Riots. So what some might call the contemporary Queer Liberation Movement is as old as I am – 56 as of this writing. Of course, Queer people and their history did not burst into existence in June of 1969. The Queer of Spirit has a long, if often hidden, history in the United States and around the world. And homoeroticism and same-gender-loving souls have no doubt existed throughout human history.
However, I tend to focus more on the here and now. What’s going on now and where I see Queer culture heading. Of course, my thoughts and feelings about those things are colored by my own journey, my own lived experience, as a Queer man. Also as a man of my time and place. A man of racial, class and educational privilege. A man who has developed from my own unique journey which has afforded me a kaleidoscope of experiences that have colored my evolution as a part of the Queer community.
In future posts, I hope to address some of these issues of identity and how they have influenced my thinking as an activist and advocate for Queer Liberation, which entails both the enrichment and enspiritment of the greater Queer Community. So stay sign up for notices of future posts and keep an eye out for more SpeakingQueerly musings on community and culture.
